The Santa Clara County La Raza Lawyers Association Commends the
Confirmation of The Honorable Edward J. Davila to the United States District
Court for the Northern District of California
February 14, 2011, Santa Clara
County, California – The Santa Clara County La Raza Lawyers Association
applauds the Senate confirmation of the Honorable Edward J. Davila to the
United States District Court for the Northern District of California.
Micaél Estremera, Santa Clara
County La Raza Lawyers Association’s president said, “Our association is
thrilled that Judge Davila has been confirmed. His accomplished legal
career and extensive community involvement make him a role model for members of
the Association. His exceptional record and his commitment to public
service will make him an excellent Judge on the Northern District Court."
Judge Davila will be the first Latino to sit in the Northern District Court
for more than 14 years. Mr. Estremera added “We are excited to see
that a Latino judge has been appointed in the Northern District. The
presence of a Latino on the Supreme Court not only affects perceptions of
fairness and inclusivity, but also serves as an ambassador in both educational
and community contexts. This is particularly critical now, when at least 36% of
Californians are Latino, yet only 3.8% of attorneys are Latino.”
Since 2001, Judge Davila has served on the Santa Clara County Superior
Court, where he oversees cases in the criminal, civil, family and juvenile
justice divisions. Previously, he was a partner at Davila & Polverino
and served as a deputy public defender in Santa Clara County. Judge
Davila was a two-time president of the Santa Clara County La Raza Lawyers
Association, and he served as President of the Santa Clara County Bar
Association in 1998. Judge Davila received the 2006 Justice Baryl Salsman
Award from the Santa Clara County Bar Association for his contributions to the
legal community.
He received his bachelor's degree from the San Diego State University and
earned his law degree from the University of California Hastings College of
Law.
The Northern District of California stretches from the Monterey Coast in the
south to California's northern border with Oregon and from the Pacific Ocean in
the west nearly to Sacramento County in the east. More than 7.3 million
people live in the district, which includes San Francisco, Oakland and San
Jose.
