Immigration Attorney and Regional Project Coordinator

Bay Area Lega Aid 

 

Organization: Bay Area Legal Aid’s (BayLegal) mission is to provide high quality legal assistance regardless of a client’s location, language, or disability. BayLegal is the largest provider of free civil legal services to low-income residents of the San Francisco Bay Area, with six regional offices serving seven counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara. BayLegal’s approximately 100 staff members provide wraparound legal services in housing preservation, domestic violence and sexual assault prevention, economic security, consumer protection, and healthcare access.

 

The Position: The Immigration Attorney and Regional Project Coordinator (Attorney) oversees the immigration legal services provided to immigrant victims of domestic violence and sexual assault throughout BayLegal’s seven county service area. The Attorney conducts intakes and prepares cases for pro bono placement, maintains an existing caseload of immigration cases, and provides technical assistance and back up coverage to pro bono and staff attorneys. The primary case types are currently U Visas, VAWA Self-Petitions, and domestic violence based Conditional Residence waivers. The Attorney will be based in one of our six regional offices, and will report to the Managing Attorney of the regional office in which s/he is located.

 

Responsibilities: The Attorney ensures that BayLegal’s immigration services are provided effectively throughout the Bay Area by both pro bono and staff attorneys with a high degree of competence.

  • Provide Direct Assistance to BayLegal Staff and Volunteers in the provision of client services including training staff, law clerks, and pro bono attorneys, providing technical assistance to staff, law clerks, and pro bono attorneys, and conducting case review meetings with staff attorneys.
  • Intake/Case Preparation including conducting intake interviews in each regional office to screen cases for eligibility for pro bono placement, requesting U visa certifications for those cases, and preparing memos for pro bono placement of the cases.

Undertake casework on BayLegal immigration-related cases as necessary including managing an existing caseload and providing back-up on cases for staff or pro bono attorneys.

Serve as in house expert on the Legal Service Corporation’s regulations on serving non-citizens.

 

About the Successful Candidate:

  • Significant experience with and knowledge of immigration law, and in particular with U and VAWA cases
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English
  • Passionate about immigration law and serving vulnerable populations
  • Experience training, both in group settings and one-on-one
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to teach and mentor students and attorneys at various skill and experience levels
  • Must be self-directed and be comfortable working in a fast paced, high volume environment
  • Membership in good standing in a State Bar Association required (California preferred)
