The Professor of Practice teaches two sections of legal writing each semester (fall and spring), with enrollments of up to approximately 18 students in each section (though historically enrollments have been approximately 12 students per section). In addition, the Professor of Practice serves on a legal writing curriculum committee that considers curricular and teaching innovations in legal writing and contributes to the development of the legal writing curriculum each year, develops and reinforces teaching skills at conferences, and supports other teaching initiatives, including helping to staff the Legal Writing Resource Center. Under limited direction, this professional level position provides services mandated by Family Code 10000-10012 which includes the development, planning, implementation, and administration of a family law program providing legal services to litigants not represented by counsel. This position facilitates and expedites family law proceedings related to child support, spousal support, and health insurance matters as required by Family Law Facilitator statute and administers self-help services in all other areas of family law, guardianships, and conservatorships.

Though a recent California law capped the interest rate of small consumer loans at approximately 36%, the courts are currently being flooded by collection actions seeking to enforce older consumer loans bearing triple digit interest rates. This webinar will focus on the landmark case of De La Torre v. CashCall, a class action asserting that CashCall’s loans bearing interest rates between 96%-135% were unconscionable. Hear class counsel describe their epic battle through the federal and state appeals courts, class certification, and ultimate victory at trial. KGACLC certified law student Vasti Montiel will discuss the Law Center’s work battling collection actions attempting to enforce similar high interest loans.
